CHUNCHO MACAW CLAY LICK TOUR FULL DAY, FROM PUERTO MALDONADO CITY.
We’ll begin our journey with a full-day tour to the Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick. This tour departs at 3:30 am from your hotel in Puerto Maldonado, with a 1.5-hour drive and a 1-hour boat ride to the best macaw clay lick, “Chuncho,” in the Tambopata Reserve.
The Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick is unique for parrots and other birds. On a clear morning, we can observe dozens of large macaws and hundreds of parrots congregating on this large bank of the Tambopata River in a vibrant and colorful spectacle worthy of a National Geographic cover story. Discreetly positioned between 50 and 80 meters from the cliff, we’ll see green, scarlet, blue, and yellow-winged macaws, as well as several smaller parrot species, descending to feed on the clay. Tours depart at dawn when the clay lick is most active on a sunny day.
Our delicious breakfast will be served at the Macaw Clay Lick.

Wildlife: Groups of capybaras, the largest rodent on Earth, are easily spotted daily, along with river turtles, caimans, and various bird species along the Tambopata River.
A 20% chance of seeing a tapir and a 10% chance of spotting a jaguar make this experience even more exciting.
Before lunch, we’ll take you to the tallest canopy tower in the middle of the jungle, a great place to see how far the Amazon basin extends. If you’d like, we also have our suspension bridge, a spot with a great view of a ravine.
After lunch, which will be served at our Treehouse Inn, we’ll set off on an adventure. We’ll kayak on the river or stream, depending on your preference. It’s a pleasant activity with a good chance of seeing capybaras, turtles, and river birds during this afternoon activity before we begin our return journey. Around 4:00 pm we will begin our journey back to Puerto Maldonado, first 15 minutes by boat and then 1.5 hours by car to your hotel or the bus station…It’s time to say goodbye.
